Building the C & A Railway
By Brian Donovan on May 18, 2006 | In Main category, C&A Railway Construction | 3 feedbacks »
My garden railway was started in the Spring of 2006. The railway was designed to fit into an existing garden in a back corner of our property. It had been mostly planted with a few small trees, shrubs and tall groundcover type perennials. I only had to move two of the perennials. A flagstone patio and gazebo (my garden folly) had already been planned (and mostly built) for the site so it would make a great spot to sit and watch trains run.

Here are a couple of before pics -

The layout initially started as two separate loops with a total of 250 feet of AristoCraft stainless steel track on a floating stone dust roadbed. The inner loop had one spur track and the larger outer loop with long passing siding. Both loops cross over a dry creek which is used as an overflow area for the pond and stream in the center area of our backyard. I altered the dry creek a bit to put in a small mountain.

Here are a couple of shots with some of the base material down -

My outdoor buddy, Rowdy, our Australian terrier, is always willing to lend a hand and does a great job at critter control -

That’s all for now.
Stayed tuned for the next episode- Same Bat Time! Same Bat Channel!

Congratulations on a great effort with your BLOG. I remember seeing your early pictures posted on lsol some time ago. To see your completed railroad does it justice.
By looking at the completed picture, you would never guess they are one and the same railroad.
Well done mate.

I'd like to echo Jerry's comments. I too, am just getting started in LS and trying to pick up ideas. Your pics are great. How long did it take for you to complete the layout?

Thanks Paul. This March will mark two years of working on the railroad. The dates of the posts are fairly accurate. I'm not sure when it will ever be done, though. I hope to get all the planned structures (about 8) done this year! Detailing may take another year.
