my Dunkirk Geared Steamer
By Brian Donovan on Nov 11, 2006 | In C&A Rolling Stock | 4 feedbacks »

I became intrigued with this little logging locomotive after seeing a beautiful scratch built on the cover of the 20th anniversary issue of GR (Dec 2003). A Dunkirk is a variation of a Heisler except the cylinders are located inside the cab behind the firebox. More info can be found about them at http://www.gearedsteam.com. Being fairly new to large scale, though I worked in HO on and off over the years since my early years, I thought I could create a reasonable model of one utilizing unused rolling stock and off the shelf parts. I was quite influenced by Vic Smith and the many others who post their great creations online.
my Logging Caboose

This project is a companion piece to my Dunkirk locomotive. I wanted a small logging caboose and not wanting to spend any money on a new caboose, I remembered I still had a Bachmann bobber caboose sitting in the closet (from the same set as the gondola I used for the Dunkirk). So with a bit of tinkering I could create a new logger from it. This was my starting point –

my Boxcab Diesel

This locomotive kitbash comes from my love of small quirky locomotives. After seeing a few different scratchbuilt, kit, and bashed boxcab diesel models, one of the existing original boxcabs at the B&O museum, and spending a bit of time looking through all the great pics here - http://home.att.net/~Berliner-Ultrasonics/boxcabs.html, I found a few boxcabs to be used as the basis for my bash.
My boxcab kitbash is prototypically based on a Pennsy A6 two axle boxcab –

The Egg Train
By Brian Donovan on Jan 25, 2008 | In C&A Rolling Stock | Send feedback »
The idea for the Egg train was stolen from Jerry Barnes, who created egg passenger cars from AristoCraft streamliner observation car ends (Jerry’s Eggs).
I created a couple of cars - an egg diner and egg coach and modified the egg critter loco. The cars use Sierra trucks and all the marker lights are lit with grain of wheat bulbs (what a pain in the butt that was!). The coach car has power pick ups with a new style Sierra truck. The cars are electrically interconnected with each other and the loco. The egg loco got new air tanks, smoke stack, bell, horn, headlight and front bumper. I trimmed down a pair of two axle truck side frames and glued them to the sides.
