I will start with a little history on my RR. I started about 4 years ago when I was granted a plot of land to start on. The area was not level and I was going to need a large amount of fill to get it level enough to work with. The area is about 20’ x 27’ and it had 4 planter boxes. I managed to get a pool digger to dump a long truck load of dirt in the street in front of my house. It took 2 days to get all of the dirt hauled to the backyard. I just piled it around all of the planters.

Now I had all of these piles of dirt with nothing to keep it in place. I went to a local dealer in used railroad ties and bought enough to build a border. Using rebar and some twisted spikes (bought at the RR tie dealer) I constructed a nice retaining wall to frame my plot of land. After leveling out the dirt piles I had a nice area to start my empire.
When I started looking into how I was going to make my tunnel I thought it would be an easy part of the railroad. I looked into bricks and mortar or trying to shape concrete. I decided against these methods as more work than I wanted to do. I had read an article about plastic culverts being used as tunnels. This sounded simple so I went this route.
I did my research on the internet and found what I wanted. I followed through and found a local supplier that could get the culvert I was looking for. I purchased a 20 foot long, 18 inch diameter culvert to make my double wide tunnel. While waiting for it to be delivered I prepared a place to bury it.
While the tunnel was just sitting around I did not want any of the local wildlife to set up residence inside. I had bad visions of the eviction and subsequent clean-up. To prevent this from happening I sealed one end with a large trash bag and a bungee cord. Since I wanted to get in the other end to work on a regular basis, I squeezed one of those big exercise balls in. Now I could open the access ports or take the ball out for working inside.
I have been inside the tunnel many times! I did some design work and figured out how I was going to support the track.

Well it has been some time since I have updated you on my tunnel. I now have the track inside. That was an experience!
LGB Caboose
I wanted to get garden trains for a long time. I read about it and thought about it but could not commit the money to get started. Then on Christmas day 2002 I started at the end! My son gave me a Great Northern Railway caboose by LGB. The road number is X 250. I started getting this caboose ready to roll a few days ago. I am using battery power on my railroad so I needed to find a way to turn the lights on.
